CHAPTER 3

Analytical Audio Commentary of Isaiah

1.  FOR, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jeru-

salem and from Judah the stay and

the staff, the whole stay of bread,

and the whole stay of water,

9:20

1.  Even now, the Lord, the Lord of Hosts,

deprives Judea and Jerusalem

both staff and crutch—

all food supply and water supply,

2.  The mighty man, and the man of

war, the judge, and the prophet, and

the prudent, and the ancient,

2.  the valiant man and soldier,

the magistrate and prophet, the augur and elder,

3.  The captain of fifty, and the hon-

ourable man, and the counsellor,

and the cunning artificer, and the

eloquent orator.

3.  the officer and dignitary,

advisers, skilled craftsmen, and orators.

4.  And I will give children to be their

princes, and babes shall rule over

them.

1:23

4.  I, the Lord, will make adolescents their rulers;

delinquents will lord it over them.

5.  And the people shall be op-

pressed, every one by another, and

every one by his neighbour: the

child shall behave himself proudly

against the ancient, and the base a-

gainst the honourable.

9:17

5.  People will oppress one another,

every man his neighbor.

The young will be insolent to the elderly,

the vile to the honorable.

6.  When a man shall take hold of his

brother of the house of his father,

saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou

our ruler, and let this ruin be under

thy hand:

24:2-4

6.  Then will a man apprehend a kinsman

of his father’s house, and say,

You have a tunic: be our leader

and take charge of this ruination!

7.  In that day shall he swear, say-

ing, I will not be an healer; for in

my house is neither bread nor cloth-

ing: make me not a ruler of the

people.

59:4-6

7.  But he will raise his hand in that day

and swear, I am no physician.

There is neither food nor clothing in my house;

you cannot make me a leader of the people.

8.  For Jerusalem is ruined, and Ju-

dah is fallen: because their tongue

and their doings are against the

LORD, to provoke the eyes of his

glory.

57:4-5

8.  Jerusalem will falter and Judea fall

because their tongue and their actions

are contrary to the Lord,

an affront to his glory before his very eyes.

9.  ¶ The shew of their countenance

doth witness against them; and they

declare their sin as Sodom, they

hide it not.  Woe unto their soul!  for

they have rewarded evil unto them-

selves.

1:10

9.  The look on their faces betrays them:

they flaunt their sin like Sodom;

they cannot hide it.

Woe to their souls;

they have brought disaster upon themselves!

10.  Say ye to the righteous, that it

shall be well with him: for they shall

eat the fruit of their doings.

62:8-9

10.  Tell the righteous it shall be well with them;

they shall eat the fruits of their own labors.

11.  Woe unto the wicked!  it shall be

ill with him: for the reward of his

hands shall be given him.

13:11

11.  But woe to the wicked

when calamity overtakes them:

they shall be paid back

for the deeds they have done!

12.  ¶ As for my people, children are

their oppressors, and women rule

over them.  O my people, they which

lead thee cause thee to err, and de-

stroy the way of thy paths.

9:16

12.  As for my people, babes subject them;

women wield authority over them.

O my people, your leaders mislead you,

abolishing your traditional ways.

13.   The LORD standeth up to plead,

and standeth to judge the people.

41:1

13.   The Lord will take a stand and contend with them;

he has arisen to judge the nations.

14.  The LORD will enter into judg-

ment with the ancients of his peo-

ple, and the princes thereof: for ye

have eaten up the vineyard; the

spoil of the poor is in your houses.

5:7

14.  He will bring to trial the elders of his people

and their rulers, and say to them,

It is you who have devoured the vineyard;

you fill your houses by depriving the needy.

15.  What mean ye that ye beat my

people to pieces, and grind the faces

of the poor?  saith the Lord GOD

of hosts.

10:1-2

15.  What do you mean by oppressing my people,

humbling the faces of the poor?

says the Lord of Hosts.

16.  ¶ Moreover the LORD saith, Be-

cause the daughters of Zion are

haughty, and walk with stretch-

ed forth necks and wanton eyes,

walking and mincing as they go,

and making a tinkling with their

feet:

16.  The Lord says, moreover,

Because the women of Zion are haughty

and put on airs, painting their eyes,

ever flirting when they walk

and clacking with their feet,

17.  Therefore the Lord will smite

with a scab the crown of the head of

the daughters of Zion, and the LORD

will discover their secret parts.

57:12

17.  the Lord will afflict the scalps

of the women of Zion with baldness;

the Lord will expose their private parts.

18.  In that day the Lord will take a-

way the bravery of their tinkling

ornaments about their feet, and their

cauls, and their round tires like the

moon,

18.  In that day the Lord will strip away their finery—the anklets, head ornaments and crescents,  ...

19.  The chains, and the bracelets,

and the mufflers,

19.  ...  the pendants, chains and scarves,  ...

20.  The bonnets, and the ornaments

of the legs, and the headbands, and

the tablets, and the earrings,

20.  ...  tiaras, bracelets and ribbons, zodiac signs and charm amulets,  ...

21.  The rings, and nose jewels,

21.  ...  the rings, the noselets,  ...

22.  The changeable suits of ap-

parel, and the mantles, and the wim-

ples, and the crisping pins,

22.  ...  the elegant dress, the shawl, the kerchief and the purse,  ...

23.  The glasses, and the fine linen,

and the hoods, and the vails.

23.  ...  hosiery, sheer linen, millinery, and cloaks.

24.  And it shall come to pass, that in-

stead of sweet smell there shall be

stink; and instead of a girdle a rent;

and instead of well set hair bald-

ness; and instead of a stomacher a

girding of sackcloth; and burning

instead of beauty.

32:11

24.  And instead of perfume there shall be a stench,

instead of the girdle, a piece of twine,

instead of the coiffure, baldness,

instead of the festive dress, a loincloth of burlap;

for in place of beauty

there shall be ignominy.a

25.  Thy men shall fall by the sword,

and thy mighty in the war.

25.  Your men shall be felled by the sword,

your might overthrown in war.

26.  And her gates shall lament and

mourn; and she being desolate shall

sit upon the ground.

51:19

26.  Her gateways shall lie bereaved and forlorn;

she shall sit on the ground destitute.
