CHAPTER 51

Analytical Audio Commentary of Isaiah

1.

1.  HEARKEN to me, ye that follow af-

ter righteousness, ye that seek the

LORD: look unto the rock whence ye

are hewn, and to the hole of the pit

whence ye are digged.

17:10

1.  Hear me, you followers of righteousness,

seekers of the Lord:

Look to the rock from which you were cut,

to the quarry out of which you were hewn;

2.

2.  Look unto Abraham your fa-

ther, and unto Sarah that bare you:

for I called him alone, and blessed

him, and increased him.

41:8-9

2.  look to Abraham your father,

to Sarah who bore you.

He was but one when I called him,

but I blessed him by making him many.

3.

3.  For the LORD shall comfort

Zion: he will comfort all her waste

places; and he will make her wilder-

ness like Eden, and her desert like

the garden of the LORD; joy and

gladness shall be found therein,

thanksgiving, and the voice of

melody.

35:1-2

3.  For the Lord is comforting Zion,

bringing solace to all her ruins;

he is making her wilderness like Eden,

her desert as the garden of the Lord.

Joyful rejoicing takes place there,

thanksgiving with the voice of song.

4.

4.  ¶ Hearken unto me, my people;

and give ear unto me, O my nation:

for a law shall proceed from me, and

I will make my judgment to rest for

a light of the people.

2:3

2:5

4.  Listen to me, my people;

give heed to me, O my nation:

The law shall go forth from me;

my precepts shall be a light to the peoples.

Then, suddenly, I will act:

5.

5.  My righteousness is near; my

salvation is gone forth, and mine

arms shall judge the people; the

isles shall wait upon me, and on

mine arm shall they trust.

46:12-13

42:4

5.  My righteousness shall be at hand

and my salvation proceed;

my arms shall judge the peoples—

the isles anticipate me, awaiting my arm.

6.

6.  Lift up your eyes to the heavens,

and look upon the earth beneath:

for the heavens shall vanish away

like smoke, and the earth shall wax

old like a garment, and they that

dwell therein shall die in like man-

ner: but my salvation shall be for

ever, and my righteousness shall not

be abolished.

50:3

45:17

6.  Lift up your eyes to the heavens;

look on the earth beneath:

the heavens shall vanish as by smoke,

the earth wear out like a garment—

its inhabitants shall die in the manner of vermin.

But my salvation shall be everlasting;

my righteousness shall never fail.

7.

7.  ¶ Hearken unto me, ye that

know righteousness, the people in

whose heart is my law; fear ye not

the reproach of men, neither be ye

afraid of their revilings.

21:10

7.  Hear me, you who know righteousness,

O people in whose heart is my law:

Do not fear the reproach of men;

be undaunted by their ridicule.

8.

8.  For the moth shall eat them up

like a garment, and the worm shall

eat them like wool: but my right-

eousness shall be for ever, and

my salvation from generation to

generation.

62:1-2

8.  For the moth shall consume them like a garment;

moths shall devour them like wool.

But my righteousness shall endure forever,

my salvation through endless generations.

9.

9.  ¶ Awake, awake, put on

strength, O arm of the LORD; a-

wake, as in the ancient days, in the

generations of old.  Art thou not it

that hath cut Rahab, and wounded

the dragon?

52:10*

9.  Awake, arise; clothe yourself with power,

O arm of the Lord!

Bestir yourself, as in ancient times,

as in generations of old.

Was it not you who carved up Rahab,

you who slew the dragon?

10.

10.  Art thou not it which hath

dried the sea, the waters of the great

deep; that hath made the depths of

the sea a way for the ransomed to

pass over?

43:16

10.  Was it not you who dried up the Sea,

the waters of the mighty deep,

and made of ocean depths a way

by which the redeemed might pass?

11.

11.  Therefore the redeemed of the

LORD shall return, and come with

singing unto Zion; and everlasting

joy shall be upon their head: they

shall obtain gladness and joy; and

sorrow and mourning shall flee

away.

35:10

29:19

11.  Let the ransomed of the Lord return!

Let them come singing to Zion,

their heads crowned with everlasting joy;

let them obtain joy and gladness,

and sorrow and sighing flee away.

12.

12.  I, even I, am he that comforteth

you: who art thou, that thou should-

est be afraid of a man that shall die,

and of the son of man which shall be

made as grass;

12.  I myself am your Comforter.

Who are you that you fear mortal man,

the children of men who shall be turned to grass?

13.

13.  And forgettest the LORD thy

maker, that hath stretched forth the

heavens, and laid the foundations of

the earth; and hast feared continu-

ally every day because of the fury of

the oppressor, as if he were ready to

destroy?  and where is the fury of the

oppressor?

51:16

14:6

14:17

13.  Have you forgotten the Lord, your Maker—

who suspends the heavens,

who sets the earth in place—

that you go all day in constant dread

of the oppressor’s rage

as he readies himself to wreak destruction?

What is there to the wrath of the oppressor?

14.

14.  The captive exile hasteneth that

he may be loosed, and that he should

not die in the pit, nor that his bread

should fail.

14.  Soon now shall he who is bowed down be set free;

he shall not die as those destined for the Pit,

neither shall he want for food.

15.

15.  But I am the LORD thy God,

that divided the sea, whose waves

roared: The LORD of hosts is his

name.

5:30

15.  It is I the Lord your God,

whose name is the Lord of Hosts,

who stir up the Sea so that its waves roar.

16.

16.  And I have put my words in thy

mouth, and I have covered thee in

the shadow of mine hand, that I may

plant the heavens, and lay the

foundations of the earth, and say

unto Zion, Thou art my people.

59:21

16.  I will put my words in your mouth

and shelter you in the shadow of my hand,

while I replant the heavens and set the earth in place,

that I may say to Zion, You are my people.

17.

17.  ¶ Awake, awake, stand up, O

Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the

hand of the LORD the cup of his

fury; thou hast drunken the dregs

of the cup of trembling, and wrung

them out.

52:1-2

17.  Rouse yourself; awaken and rise up, O Jerusalem,

you who have drunk from the Lord’s hand

the cup of his wrath,

drinking to the dregs the bowl of stupor.

18.

18.  There is none to guide her a-

mong all the sons whom she hath

brought forth; neither is there any

that taketh her by the hand of all

the sons that she hath brought up.

50:1

18.  There was none to guide her

among all the children she bore,

none to take her by the hand of all the sons she reared.

19.

19.  These two things are come unto

thee; who shall be sorry for thee?

desolation, and destruction, and the

famine, and the sword: by whom

shall I comfort thee?

3:25-26

19.  Twofold calamity has befallen you:

desolation, ruin—and who laments you?

famine, the sword—and who consolesa you?

20.

20.  Thy sons have fainted, they lie

at the head of all the streets, as a

wild bull in a net: they are full of

the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of

thy God.

20.  Your children lie in a faint at the corner of every street,

taken in a net like bison.

They have their fill of the wrath of the Lord,

of your God’s angry rebuke.

21.

21.  ¶ Therefore hear now this, thou

afflicted, and drunken, but not with

wine:

48:9-10

21.  Now therefore hear this, O wretched one,

drunk, though not with wine.

22.

22.  Thus saith thy Lord the LORD,

and thy God that pleadeth the cause

of his people, Behold, I have taken

out of thine hand the cup of tremb-

ling, even the dregs of the cup of my

fury; thou shalt no more drink it

again:

22.  Thus says the Lord, your Lord and God,

who defends the cause of his people:

I am taking the cup of stupor from your hand;

you shall drink no more from the bowl of my wrath.

23.

23.  But I will put it into the hand of

them that afflict thee; which have

said to thy soul, Bow down, that we

may go over: and thou hast laid the

body as the ground, and as the

street, to them that went over.

60:14

23.  And I give it into the hand of your tormentors,

those who said of your life,

Lie prostrate that we may go over you—

so that you made your back as the ground,

a mere thoroughfare to passers by.

a19  So 1QIsaa; LXX. MT how can I console.
