CHAPTER 65 |
1. I AM sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name. |
1. I was available to those who did not inquire of me;a I was accessible to those who did not seek me. I said, Here am I; I am here, to a nation that did not invoke my name. |
2. | ||||
2. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts; |
2. I held out my hands all the day to a defiant people, who walk in ways that are not good, following their own imagination— |
3. A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick; |
3. a people who constantly provoke me to my face, sacrificing in parks, making smoke upon bricks, |
4. Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abo- minable things is in their vessels; |
4. who sit in sepulchres, spend nights in hideouts, who eat swine’s flesh, their bowls full of polluted broth, |
5. | ||||
5. Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day. |
5. who think, Keep your distance, don’t come near me; I am holier than you! Such are a smoke to my nostrils, a fire smoldering all day long. |
6. | ||||
6. Behold, it is written before me: I will not keep silence, but will re- compense, even recompense into their bosom, |
6. See, it is written before me that I will not be still till I have paid backb into their bosom |
7. | ||||
7. Your iniquities, and the iniqui- ties of your fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned in- cense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom. |
7. theirc own iniquities and theirc fathers’ alike, says the Lord. To those who kindle sacrifice in the mountains, who affront me on the hills, I will measure out in their laps the payment that has accrued. |
8. | ||||
8. ¶ Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants' sakes, that I may not de- stroy them all. |
8. Thus says the Lord: As when there is juice in a cluster of grapes and someone says, Don't destroy it, it is still good, so I will do for the sake of my servants by not destroying everything: |
9. | ||||
9. And I will bring forth a seed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an in- heritor of my mountains: and mine elect shall inherit it, and my ser- vants shall dwell there. |
9. I will extract offspring out of Jacob, and out of Judah heirs of my mountains; my chosen ones shall inherit them, my servants shall dwell there. |
10. | ||||
10. And Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for the herds to lie down in, for my people that have sought me. |
10. Sharon shall become pasture for flocks, and the Valley of Achor a resting place for the herds of my people who seek me. |
11. | ||||
11. ¶ But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number. |
11. As for you who forsake the Lord and forget my holy mountain, who spread tables for Luck and pour mixed wines for Fortune, |
12. | ||||
12. Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not. |
12. I will destine you to the sword; all of you shall succumb to the slaughter. For when I called, you did not respond; when I spoke, you would not give heed. You did what was evil in my eyes; you chose to do what was not my will. |
13. | ||||
13. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: |
13. Therefore thus says my Lord the Lord: My servants shall eat indeed, while you shall hunger; my servants shall drink indeed, while you shall thirst; my servants shall rejoice indeed, while you shall be dismayed. |
14. | ||||
14. Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. |
14. My servants shall shout indeed, for gladness of heart, while you shall cry out with heartbreak, howling from brokenness of spirit. |
15. | ||||
15. And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name: |
15. Your name shall be left to serve my chosen ones as a curse when my Lord the Lord slays you. But his servants he will call by a different name. |
16. | ||||
16. That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes. |
16. Those of them who invoke blessings on themselves in the earth shall do so by the true God, and those of them who swear oaths in the earth shall do so by the God of truth. The troubles of the past shall be forgotten and hidden from my eyes. |
17. | ||||
17. ¶ For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. |
17. See, I create new heavens and a new earth; former events shall not be remembered or recalled to mind. |
18. | ||||
18. But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, be- hold, I create Jerusalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy. |
18. Rejoice, then, and be glad forever in what I create. See, I create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy. |
19. | ||||
19. And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying. |
19. I will delight in Jerusalem, rejoice in my people; no more shall be heard there the sound of weeping or the cry of distress. |
20. | ||||
20. There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed. |
20. No more shall there be infants alive but a few days, or the aged who do not live out their years; those who die young shall be a hundred years old, and those who fail to reach a hundred shall be accursed. |
21. | ||||
21. And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them. |
21. When men build houses, they will dwell in them; when they plant vineyards, they will eat their fruit. |
22. | ||||
22. They shall not build, and an- other inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands. |
22. They shall not build so that others may dwell, or plant so that others may eat. The lifetime of my people shall be as the lifetime of a tree; my chosen ones shall outlast the work of their hands. |
23. | ||||
23. They shall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the seed of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them. |
23. They shall not exert themselves in vain, or bear children doomed for calamity. For they are of the lineage of those blessed by the Lord, and their posterity with them. |
24. | ||||
24. And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. |
24. Before they call I will reply; while they are yet speaking I will respond. |
25. | ||||
25. The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD. |
25. The wolf and the lamb will graze alike, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; as for the serpent, dust shall be its food: there shall be no harm or injury done throughout my holy mountain, says the Lord. |
