Isaiah Institute Translation
|Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;||1||Woe to those who enact unjust laws, who draft oppressive legislation—||הוֹי הַחֹקְקִים חִקְקֵי־אָוֶן וּמְכַתְּבִים עָמָל כִּתֵּבוּ ׃|
|To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!||2||denying justice to the needy, depriving the poor of my people of their right, making plunder of widows, mere spoil of the fatherless!||לְהַטּוֹת מִדִּין דַּלִּים וְלִגְזֹל מִשְׁפַּט עֲנִיֵּי עַמִּי לִהְיוֹת אַלְמָנוֹת שְׁלָלָם וְאֶת־יְתוֹמִים יָבֹזּוּ ׃|
|And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?||3||What will you do in the day of reckoningwhen the holocaust overtakes you from afar?To whom will you flee for help?Where will you leave your wealth?||וּמַה־תַּעֲשׂוּ לְיוֹם פְּקֻדָּה וּלְשׁוֹאָה מִמֶּרְחָק תָּבוֹא עַל־מִי תָּנוּסוּ לְעֶזְרָה וְאָנָה תַעַזְבוּ כְּבוֹדְכֶם ׃|
|Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.||4||There shall nothing remainbut to kneel among the captivesor fall among the slain.Yet for all this his anger is not abated;his hand is upraised still.||בִּלְתִּי כָרַע תַּחַת אַסִּיר וְתַחַת הֲרוּגִים יִפֹּלוּ בְּכָל־זֹאת לֹא־שָׁב אַפּוֹ וְעוֹד יָדוֹ נְטוּיָה ׃|
|O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.||5||Hail the Assyrian, the rod of my anger! He is a staff—my wrath in their hand.a||הוֹי אַשּׁוּר שֵׁבֶט אַפִּי וּמַטֶּה־הוּא בְיָדָם זַעְמִי ׃|
|I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.||6||I will commission him against a godless nation, appoint him over the peopledeserving of my vengeance,to pillage for plunder, to spoliate for spoil,to tread underfoot like mud in the streets.||בְּגוֹי חָנֵף אֲשַׁלְּחֶנּוּ וְעַל־עַם עֶבְרָתִי אֲצַוֶּנּוּ לִשְׁלֹל שָׁלָל וְלָבֹז בַּז וּלְשׂיּמוֹ (וּלְשׂוּמוֹ) מִרְמָס כְּחֹמֶר חוּצוֹת ׃|
|Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few.||7||Nevertheless, it shall not seem so to him;this shall not be what he has in mind. His purpose shall be to annihilateand to exterminate nations not a few.||וְהוּא לֹא־כֵן יְדַמֶּה וּלְבָבוֹ לֹא־כֵן יַחְשֹׁב כִּי לְהַשְׁמִיד בִּלְבָבוֹ וּלְהַכְרִית גּוֹיִם לֹא מְעָט ׃|
|For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?||8||He will say, Are not my commanders kings,one and all?||כִּי יֹאמַר הֲלֹא שָׂרַי יַחְדָּו מְלָכִים ׃|
|Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?||9||Has not Calno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad,Samaria no better than Damascus?||הֲלֹא כְּכַרְכְּמִישׁ כַּלְנוֹ אִם־לֹא כְאַרְפַּד חֲמָת אִם־לֹא כְדַמֶּשֶׂק שֹׁמְרוֹן ׃|
|As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;||10||As I could do this to the pagan states, whose statues exceededthose of Jerusalem and Samaria,||כַּאֲשֶׁר מָצְאָה יָדִי לְמַמְלְכֹת הָאֱלִיל וּפְסִילֵיהֶם מִירוּשָׁלִַם וּמִשֹּׁמְרוֹן ׃|
|Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?||11||shall I not do to Jerusalem and its imageseven as I did to Samaria and its idols?||הֲלֹא כַּאֲשֶׁר עָשִׂיתִי לְשֹׁמְרוֹן וְלֶאֱלִילֶיהָ כֵּן אֶעֱשֶׂה לִירוּשָׁלִַם וְלַעֲצַבֶּיהָ ׃|
|Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.||12||But when my Lord has fully accomplished his work in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will punish the king of Assyria for his notorious boasting and infamous conceit,||וְהָיָה כִּי־יְבַצַּע אֲדֹנָי אֶת־כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂהוּ בְּהַר צִיּוֹן וּבִירוּשָׁלִָם אֶפְקֹד עַל־פְּרִי־גֹדֶל לְבַב מֶלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּר וְעַל־תִּפְאֶרֶת רוּם עֵינָיו ׃|
|For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:||13||because he said,I have done it by my own abilityand shrewdness, for I am ingenious.I have done away with the borders of nations,I have ravaged their reserves,I have vastly reduced the inhabitants.||כִּי אָמַר בְּכֹחַ יָדִי עָשִׂיתִי וּבְחָכְמָתִי כִּי נְבֻנוֹתִי וְאָסִיר גְּבוּלֹת עַמִּים וַעֲתיּדֹתֵיהֶם (וַעֲתוּדוֹתֵיהֶם) שׁוֹשֵׂתִי וְאוֹרִיד כַּאבִּיר יוֹשְׁבִים ׃|
|And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.||14||I have impounded the wealth of peoples like a nest, and I have gathered up the whole worldas one gathers abandoned eggs;not one flapped its wings,or opened its mouth to utter a peep.||וַתִּמְצָא כַקֵּן יָדִי לְחֵיל הָעַמִּים וְכֶאֱסֹף בֵּיצִים עֲזֻבוֹת כָּל־הָאָרֶץ אֲנִי אָסָפְתִּי וְלֹא הָיָה נֹדֵד כָּנָף וּפֹצֶה פֶה וּמְצַפְצֵף ׃|
|Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.||15||Shall an axe exalt itselfabove the one who hews with it,or a saw vaunt itselfover him who handles it?As though the rod wielded him who lifts it up!As though the staff held up the onewho is not made of wood!||הֲיִתְפָּאֵר הַגַּרְזֶן עַל הַחֹצֵב בּוֹ אִם־יִתְגַּדֵּל הַמַּשּׂוֹר עַל־מְנִיפוֹ כְּהָנִיף שֵׁבֶט וְאֶת־מְרִימָיו כְּהָרִים מַטֶּה לֹא־עֵץ ׃|
|Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.||16||Therefore will the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, send a consumption into his fertile lands, and cause a fire to flare up like a burning hearth,to undermine his glory:||לָכֵן יְשַׁלַּח הָאָדוֹן יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת בְּמִשְׁמַנָּיו רָזוֹן וְתַחַת כְּבֹדוֹ יֵקַד יְקֹד כִּיקוֹד אֵשׁ ׃|
|And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;||17||the Light of Israel will be the fireand their Holy One the flame, and it shall burn up and devourhis briars and thorns in a single day.||וְהָיָה אוֹר־יִשְׂרָאֵל לְאֵשׁ וּקְדוֹשׁוֹ לְלֶהָבָה וּבָעֲרָה וְאָכְלָה שִׁיתוֹ וּשְׁמִירוֹ בְּיוֹם אֶחָד ׃|
|And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth.||18||His choice forests and productive fieldsit will consume, both life and substance, turning them into a rotting morass.||וּכְבוֹד יַעְרוֹ וְכַרְמִלּוֹ מִנֶּפֶשׁ וְעַד־בָּשָׂר יְכַלֶּה וְהָיָה כִּמְסֹס נֹסֵס ׃|
|And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.||19||And the trees left of his forest shall be so few,a child could record them.||וּשְׁאָר עֵץ יַעְרוֹ מִסְפָּר יִהְיוּ וְנַעַר יִכְתְּבֵם ׃|
|And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.||20||In that day those who survive of Israeland who escape of the house of Jacobwill no longer rely on him who struck them, but will truly rely on Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel:||וְהָיָה בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא לֹא־יוֹסִיף עוֹד שְׁאָר יִשְׂרָאֵל וּפְלֵיטַת בֵּית־יַעֲקֹב לְהִשָּׁעֵן עַל־מַכֵּהוּ וְנִשְׁעַן עַל־יְהוָה קְדוֹשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּאֱמֶת ׃|
|The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.||21||of Jacob a remnant will returnto the One Mighty in Valor.||שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב שְׁאָר יַעֲקֹב אֶל־אֵל גִּבּוֹר ׃|
|For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.||22||For though your people, O Israel,be as the sands of the sea, only a remnant will return;although annihilation is decreed,it shall overflow with righteousness.||כִּי אִם־יִהְיֶה עַמְּךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל כְּחוֹל הַיָּם שְׁאָר יָשׁוּב בּוֹ כִּלָּיוֹן חָרוּץ שׁוֹטֵף צְדָקָה ׃|
|For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land.||23||For the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, will carry out the utter destructiondecreed upon the whole earth.||כִּי כָלָה וְנֶחֱרָצָה אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה צְבָאוֹת עֹשֶׂה בְּקֶרֶב כָּל־הָאָרֶץ ׃|
|Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.||24||Therefore, thus says my Lord,Jehovah of Hosts:O my people who inhabit Zion,be not afraid of the Assyrians, though they strike you with the rodor raise their staff over you,as did the Egyptians.||לָכֵן כֹּה־אָמַר אֲדֹנָי יְהוִה צְבָאוֹת אַל־תִּירָא עַמִּי יֹשֵׁב צִיּוֹן מֵאַשּׁוּר בַּשֵּׁבֶט יַכֶּכָּה וּמַטֵּהוּ יִשָּׂא־עָלֶיךָ בְּדֶרֶךְ מִצְרָיִם ׃|
|For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction.||25||For my anger will very soon come to an end;my wrath will become their undoing.||כִּי־עוֹד מְעַט מִזְעָר וְכָלָה זַעַם וְאַפִּי עַל־תַּבְלִיתָם ׃|
|And the Lord of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.||26||Jehovah of Hosts will raise the whip against them,as when he struck the Midianitesat the Rock of Oreb. His staff is over the Sea,and he will lift it over themas he did to the Egyptians.||וְעוֹרֵר עָלָיו יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת שׁוֹט כְּמַכַּת מִדְיָן בְּצוּר עוֹרֵב וּמַטֵּהוּ עַל־הַיָּם וּנְשָׂאוֹ בְּדֶרֶךְ מִצְרָיִם ׃|

King James Version
Isaiah Institute Translation
And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
When Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not overpower it.
Two generations of kings from the time Isaiah receives his prophetic commission, an expansionist Assyria threatens to invade the kingdom of Aram (Syria), the ten-tribed Northern Kingdom of Israel, and the Southern Kingdom of Judah and to annex them into its empire. When King Ahaz of Judah refuses to join Aram and Israel in an alliance to resist Assyria, they invade the Southern Kingdom to overthrow Ahaz and put a puppet ruler on his throne who will join their coalition. Ahaz, moreover, becomes an important type in the Book of Isaiah of an end-time ruler who proves disloyal to Israel’s God.
